We were taught to aim for precision.

And while there’s beauty in that discipline, many of us lost something along the way.

Hi, I'm Clíodhna

For over 30 years I have played on concert stages, studied with wonderful teachers across Europe and North America, and fallen head over heels for the timeless beauty of Celtic music.

But here’s the thing: what lights me up most is not the technique or the accolades. It is the connection, to sound, to self, and to that spark inside the music that makes us feel alive.

I started The Celtic Cello Club because again and again I met cellists who were longing for something more.

Some were classically trained and wondering how to make Celtic music feel natural. Some could play the notes, but didn’t know how to add the lift, rhythm, ornamentation, or flow.

Some wanted to join in with other musicians, but weren’t sure what to play.

Some were returning after a break and simply needed a kind place to begin again.

And underneath all of that, I heard the same quiet wish:

✨ More joy every time they picked up their cello

What they didn’t need was another set of rules. What they did need was permission to listen, explore, and play.

That’s exactly what the Club is: a space to get curious, to follow your ear, to ask questions, to try things gently, and to let your cello sound like you. No pressure. No proving. Just music that feels good in your hands and in your heart.

I haven’t played in years. Will I be too far behind?

Not at all. The Club was created with adult cellists in mind, including those who are returning after a break. Everything is taught in a way that’s clear, gentle, and welcoming, with plenty of support to help you ease back in. You don’t need to arrive polished or perfectly in shape. You just need to begin where you are.

Do I need to be able to read music?

Not necessarily. Sheet music is included for each tune, but I also teach by ear and intuition, and many members enjoy learning that way. You’re welcome to use the sheet music, listen to the recordings, follow the tutorials, or find a blend that suits you.

What level do I need to be?

This is ideal for anyone with basic cello technique in first position and an openness to exploring. You don’t need to be advanced. You don’t need to know all the theory. You just need to be comfortable enough with your cello to learn simple tunes and willing to try a more creative, Celtic way of playing.

What if I can’t attend the live sessions?

All sessions are recorded and added to your membership portal, so you can revisit them anytime. Many members learn from the replays, and the Club is designed to fit around real life. You can join live when you can, and return to the recordings whenever you need them.

What if I can’t play fast tunes?

You are not alone. Many cellists worry about fast passages, especially in Irish and Scottish music. Inside the Club, you can always take things slowly, use the recordings at your own pace, and focus on the lift, rhythm, and feel before speed. Celtic music is not only about playing fast. It is about playing with life, pulse, and heart.

Will this help me make Celtic music sound more natural on the cello?

Yes, that is a big part of what we explore. Through monthly tunes, live coaching, guest artist sessions, and play-alongs, you’ll begin to understand the bowing, rhythm, ornaments, drones, harmonies, and little touches that help Celtic music feel more natural in your hands.

Will I learn harmony, accompaniment, or what else to play besides the melody?

Yes. This is one of the beautiful things about exploring Celtic music on the cello. We’ll look at ways your cello can support the music, not only carry the tune. That might include drones, simple bass lines, harmonies, chord patterns, rhythmic ideas, and accompaniment choices that help you fit in more confidently.

What if I don’t know how to improvise?

That is completely fine. You don’t need to arrive as an improviser. We approach improvisation gently, through listening, small variations, tune fragments, chord tones, and simple musical choices. The goal is not to throw you into the deep end. It is to help you feel less afraid of exploring.

I’m nervous about joining a community. What if I’m shy?

You are welcome here. You can participate in the way that feels right for you. Some members ask questions and share often. Others quietly listen, learn from the replays, and take their time. There is no pressure to perform or prove anything. The community is there to support you, not put you on the spot.

Is this just for people who love Celtic music?

Not at all. Many members join simply because they’re curious, looking for more freedom in their playing, or want to reconnect with their instrument. The tunes are Celtic but the transformation is universal.

Is there feedback or personal support?

Yes. You’ll be able to ask questions during the live calls, connect with others in the private community, and occasionally receive direct feedback in masterclasses or workshops. There is also a bonus group class where you can ask practical questions about cello mechanics, such as sound production, bow contact, vibrato, string crossings, fast playing, and ease in the body.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. The Celtic Cello Club is a monthly membership, and you’re welcome to cancel anytime with just a few clicks. No pressure, no fuss.

What if I don’t have time to learn three tunes every month?

You are never expected to learn everything. The three monthly tunes give you choice, not homework. You can focus on one, explore all three, or simply attend the live session and return to the recordings later. The Club is designed to support real life, not compete with it.

How much time should I plan to spend each month?

The students who experience the most progress in their Celtic Cello journey typically attend the monthly 90-minute call for instruction and spend 10-15 minutes each day with their cello.
